Fruit flies and their close cousins mosquitoes are two types of flies that seem to appear mostly in the warmer months. Fruit flies that are attracted to fruits and vegetables, and mosquitoes that are attracted to indoor plants and moist soil, are not only a nuisance in the home, but they also greatly shorten the life of the food and plants they feed on.

Because of the speed of its spread and the general annoyance of seeing it spread through the home, people often run to the store to buy the first toxic insecticide they see.

How to get rid of fruit flies in your home

I love summer for more reasons than I can count. But there is one downside to the warm, sunny season – and that downside is the insects. I know the majority of insects play an important role in our ecosystem, but when they are inside my house, I just want them! Especially in warm weather when the windows are open and the bowl of fruit is full, fruit flies always seem to be swarming around our kitchen.

Fruit flies can also come out through the drain and garbage disposal and stay around the trash can. Fortunately, there is a cheap, effective, and natural way to get rid of them. And I know it works because I use this method every year!

Facebook user Jerry A Williams explains that a very effective way to get rid of fruit flies and mosquitoes is to fill a glass with a little apple cider vinegar, cover the top with foil, and poke holes in the foil with a fork. He also suggests placing a piece of sticky fly trap paper over the cup. Flies are attracted to the smell of the apple cider vinegar and make their way into the cup or attach themselves to the paper. Within a short period of time, the flies will be completely gone!

As I mentioned, I've tried this hack a few times but I usually use plastic wrap instead of tin foil - I think both should work just fine. I'm not kidding when I tell you the fruit fly problem went away in one day with this method. So, if flies and mosquitoes are trying to make your kitchen their home this summer, try this hack - I think you'll agree with me on how well it works!
